Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai & Keita Kurabe) This is the story of "The Crow Girl and the Woodcutter." Long ago, there was a very poor man. He lived alone in his house. Carrying his only axe, he went to the forest and cut down trees every day to sell them, making a living. One day, while he was cutting trees, he accidentally hit his leg with the axe. Blood started to flow heavily, and he couldn't walk anymore. While he was in great pain and had fainted, a crow saw him. Feeling very sorry for him, the crow took one of its three magical medicines and applied it to the man's wound. Then, the wound healed immediately. When the wound was fully healed, the man regained consciousness and returned home. The next day, while the man was cutting trees again in the forest, he met a girl. That girl was a crow that had turned into a human by drinking one of the magical medicines. When the man saw the girl, he asked, "Who are you?" The girl replied, "When you were injured and had fainted yesterday," "I used a magical medicine to heal you." Then the man realized that his wound had healed so quickly. He thanked the girl and took her home, and they became a couple. As they lived together, the woman told the man, "From now on, you mustn't cut trees." At night, while the man was sleeping, she whistled. Many of her crow friends came and help her sew cloth. When the man woke up in the morning, there were many cloths ready, and she sent the man to sell them at the market. As they spent their days this way, they became wealthy, built a large house, and lived with servants. But as they became wealthy, the man grew very arrogant. He began to mock his wife as a bird-turned-woman, and even when he went to the market, he hardly returned home. The wife, as before, called her crow friends and wove cloth. One day, the man brought another woman home from the market. When the wife saw him bring another woman, she asked her husband, "Why did you bring another woman?" The man said, "I can no longer live with a bird like you." "I'm rich now." "I have everything." "You should go back to where you belong!" Hearing this, the wife became very sad, ran into the forest, and drank the last magical medicine, turning back into a crow. When she turned into a crow, the man's money, his house, and everything he had in the village disappeared, and he became as poor as before. The woman he brought also left him. The man regretted deeply, and as he went to the forest crying. His wife, now a crow again, came to him and said, "Why are you crying?" The man said, "When I injured my leg here," "the girl who helped me became my wife." "I became very rich." "But because I didn't follow my wife's words," "I lost everything I had," "and now I'm crying in sadness." Then, the crow said, "Even if you regret it now, it's too late." "You didn't follow my words." "There is no medicine left to help you." "I used one of the medicines to heal you." "Another one I used to become your wife." "And the last one I used to turn back into a crow." "So, you must return to your old life of cutting trees." The crow flew away. Because the man didn't follow his wife's words, he had to return to his hard life as a woodcutter, just as before.
